This year Walker Construction celebrates 55 years of successful business, during which time we have made a significant contribution to the built environment across the South East. Beautifully illustrated in this charming Cine Film footage captured 50 years ago.
The clip captures works on the Folkestone Bypass contract, awarded to Walker Construction in 1969. Folkestone Council commissioned us for the then contract sum of £130,000.00. Equating to approximately £6 million in today’s value.
The 18 month contract to build a new bypass from Cherry Garden Lane to the top of Blackbull road included 2 subways and a new roundabout. The Folkestone contract was a huge opportunity for the firm, presenting the largest works the company had ever undertaken at the time. It took a whopping 75% of the company’s resources!
Split into 2 sections, the bypass itself was managed by Steve Walker Snr and the subways and roundabout headed by Hector Walker. This contract was completed on time successfully and heralded the beginning of something very exciting for Walker Construction.
Immediately after handover Walker Construction secured numerous local ity contracts including: Hill Road and Dover Hill in Folkestone, and York Street in Dover, to name a few.
Steve Walker, Chairman comments: “It is fortunate that Cine film has captured some of the construction of the Bypass, enabling us to gain an insight into some of our heritage”.
In the year we celebrate 55 years of business, the Walker Family and Directors are delighted to be named finalists in the KIEBA Family Business of the Year category. “We have celebrated numerous award nominations over the years, but this particular award is very special to us, as it recognises our ethos as a family business. We pride ourselves on our open door policy and encourage employee’s involvement - this nomination is about every member of staff who are all members of the Walker Construction family. It is down to them, that we are celebrating this recognition. Along with the Walker Trust, this ranks to me, as Chairman, our proudest achievement as a business in our long history so far.” – Steve Walker, Chairman.
We take our role as a construction SME very seriously. Be it our commitment to employee training and development, our responsibility to share best practice with our supply chain, or our pledge to promote and endorse our industry to young people. The marketplace has changed quite drastically in our 55 years, our adaptability and zealous nature to constantly learn and improve is why we believe Walker Construction continues to be one of the most prominent, and widely respected construction and civil engineering companies in South East England.
